Interwoven Identities 2.0

The event “Interwoven Identities 2.0 – The Handloom Narratives,” presented by WICCI Handloom Council, took place on August 19th and 20th, 2022, at Hyatt Regency in Chennai.

Day One of ‘Interwoven Identities 2.0:

The day began with registration from 9:00 am to 9:45 am. VIPs and special guests were welcomed at 9:45 am, followed by the exhibition launch and ribbon cutting ceremony by Chief Guest Mr. R. Gandhi, Honourable Minister, Handlooms & Textiles, Tamil Nadu Government, at 10:00 am.

The schedule for the day unfolded as follows:

  1. The inauguration ceremony commenced at 10:15 am with the lighting of the lamp by Smt. Selvi Selvam, Dr. Harbeen Arora, and the Chief Guest.
  2. Welcoming address and speech by Mr. R. Gandhi, Honourable Minister, Handlooms & Textiles, Tamil Nadu Government, took place at 10:45 am.
  3. Dr. Harbeen Arora, the Founder of ALL, WEF, WICCI, and G100, delivered the inaugural speech at 11:00 am.
  4. Ms. Kalyani Pramod, the Guest of Honour, gave a keynote address at 11:10 am.

A tea break was held from 11:25 am to 11:45 am, followed by an announcement by Dr. Harbeen Arora regarding the G100 initiative for Fashion & Textiles. Sponsor videos were showcased during this time.

The plenary session, “Creating An Identity For The Modern Indian: Embracing Current Trends Within The Handloom Industry,” took place at 12:00 pm. The session was moderated by Ramya Mohan and featured panelists Arundhati Menon and Sabita Radhakrishna.

Sponsor promotions occurred from 1:00 pm to 1:15 pm, followed by a lunch break from 1:15 pm to 1:45 pm.

The afternoon plenary session, “Circularity In Apparel Design,” started at 1:45 pm. It was moderated by Julie Kagti and featured panelists Bhaavya Goenka, Shilpa Sharma, and Amita Deshpande.

At 2:45 pm, a fireside chat titled “Beyond The Loom” took place with Aditi Jain. Julie Kagti moderated the conversation.

The next plenary session, “Interplay Of Tradition & Innovation In Handlooms,” began at 3:15 pm. The panel, moderated by Julie Kagti, included Banhi Jha, Belaa Sanghvi, and Uma Prajapati.

A tea break was scheduled from 4:15 pm to 4:30 pm.

At 4:30 pm, a fireside chat with Pavithra Muddaya on providing sustainable work in the Handloom sector took place. Shakthi Bhuvaneswari moderated the discussion.

From 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm, there was a presentation by HEPC (Handloom Export Promotion Council).

Sponsor announcements followed at 5:45 pm, and a vote of thanks concluded the day’s events.

In the evening, a fashion show was held from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Day Two of ‘Interwoven Identies 2.0 – The Handloom Narratives’:

The second day began with registration at 9:00 am.

Dr. Harbeen Arora delivered the opening speech at 9:45 am.

At 10:00 am, there was an insightful talk with Naresh Ramasubramaniam on “Weaving Is The New Yoga,” moderated by Ramya Mohan.

Nivedita Louis presented “Unknown Weaves Of Tamilnadu” through a PowerPoint presentation at 10:40 am.

A tea break took place at 11:00 am.

At 11:15 am, a fireside chat featuring R. Nageshwari and G. Gomathi, titled “Aspire To Inspire! Social Change Makers – Perspectives Of Terms & Traditions Of Handmade Textiles of TN,” was conducted with Dr. Bessie Cecil and Niveditha Louis.

The plenary session on “How Culture Of Doing leads to a culture of Understanding & Empathy – from a weaver’s perspective” started at 11:45 am. The panel, moderated by Ramya Mohan, consisted of Aarthi Neelakrishnan, Pooja Rajendran, and Aishwarya Manivannan.

At 12:45 pm, there was a fireside chat with Swaminathan on “Farm To Fabric,” moderated by Shakthi Bhuvaneswari.

A lunch break was scheduled from 1:15 pm.

At 1:45 pm, an in-depth conversation with master craftsman and designer N Shanker, titled “In Conversation With A Trail Blazer,” took place. Shakthi Bhuvaneswari moderated the discussion.

The plenary session on “Cultural Significance & How Revival Plays A Role In The Survival Of The Craft & Artisans” started at 2:15 pm. The panel, moderated by Julie Kagti, included Dr. Hemlatha Jain, Aditi Jain, and Shahwar Shohrat.

A fireside chat with Belaa Sanghvi on “Patan Patola & Its Evolution” began at 3:15 pm. Julie Kagti moderated the conversation.

At 4:00 pm, the plenary session titled “User-Centric Approach, Creative Leadership & The Role Of Technology In The Handloom Space” took place. The panel, moderated by Ramya Mohan, included Jitendra Kumar, Yogesh Jhamtani, and Vivek Karunakaran.

Another fireside chat on “Farm To Fabric” with Swaminathan Vaithilingam was conducted at 5:00 pm.

At 5:30 pm, felicitation for the WICCI team was held.
